International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer: 16 September
The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated globally on September 16th every year. The theme for this year is ‘Caring for all life under the sun’.
The Day commemorates the date of the signing of the ‘Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer’. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Ozone Secretariat launched a communication campaign #OzoneHeroes ahead of World Ozone Day.
PV Sindhu enters Korea Open final
India’s top shuttler, Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu reach one step closer to winning the Korea Open Super Series after advancing to the final of the women’s singles event on Saturday.
The 22 year old, Sindhu defeated sixth ranked Chinese He Bingjiao by 21-10, 17-21, 21-16 in the semi-finals that lasted for an hour and six minutes.
India’s Forex Reserves Top $400 billion for the First Time
For the first time ever, forex exchange reserves crossed the $400 billion mark, as the stockpile stood at $400.7 billion on September 8, the Reserve Bank of India relesded the report on friday.
With the Federal Reserve set to shrink its balance sheet—details of which could be announced next week—the holdings may help the rupee withstand any volatility even if global funds turn away from India’s slowing economy.
Vishwakarma Day : September 17

Railways to Use Tablets For Feedback
Passengers on premium trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi will soon asked for their feedback on tablets about the food, toilets, linen provided and staff behavior. Passengers have to judge the facilities provided and enter their raking out of 10.
The newly elected Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is expected to announce the programme ‘Project Swarn’ on September 25. The initiative is a part of improving passenger experience by the Railway Board.
President Kovind launches nationwide campaign: “Swachhata Hi Sewa”
The President Ram Nath Kovind has kicked off the nationwide campaign ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ from a village in Kanpur, Utter Pradesh. The campaign aims to take PM Modi’s cleanliness initiative ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ to a higher trajectory. The main objective of the mission is to mobilise the people between September 15 to October 2nd.
The President also made people take a pledge to create a clean, healthy and new India. President Kovind also urged the people to take up responsibility for the cleanliness of their surroundings. “Today, we are fighting a different battle – battle against uncleanliness,” he said.
Goa to Host 36th National Games
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) formally awarded to Goa the rights to host the 36th National Games. The announcement was made by the state sports minister Manohar Ajgaonkar.
Ajgaonkar stated that IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta, in a letter to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, had formally conferred the rights to the state to host the sporting event in November 2017.
Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Elected as Chair of the IOC Ethics Commission
Former United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was elected as Chair of Ethics Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for a four-year tenure. Ban succeeds Youssoupha Ndiaye of Senegal whose term has come to an end.
His appointment was proposed by the IOC Executive Board and was approved during the IOC Session in Lima with a 74-4 majority.
Enivornment Ministry Launches Wood is Good Campaign
Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Environmental Minister inaugurated a two-day conference on “Sustainable landscapes and forest ecosystems: Theory to Practice”.

Google to Launch Mobile Payment Service in India
Google announced to unveil a digital payment service in India to enter into the the local market of digital payments. In July, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) had stated that Google had completed the testing of its UPI payment service and was awaiting Reserve Bank of India’s approval to launch its service in the country.
Google will soon launch its payment gateway named ‘Google Tez’, which will include support for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as well as mobile wallets like Paytm and MobiKwik.
Tata Sons Limited is looking to change its status from a public limited company to a private limited company. For this, Tata Sons has sought approval from its shareholders to amend its memorandum of association and article of association and article of association for the same.
The change in Tata Sons’ corporate structure will require to be cleared by a special resolution, needing at least 75% votes. Besides shareholders’ approval, the change in its status will also need an approval from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
ICICI Lombard IPO Opens: Brokerages Give Thumbs Up
India will witness the first Initial Public Offering (IPO) by an insurer-ICICI Lombard General Insurance today. The subsidiary ofICICI Bank will offer up to 8,62,47,187 equity shares for subscription on 15th September, 2017.
“At this valuation the issue seems expensive considering a RoE of 17.2 percent for FY17, loss ratio of 80.6 percent and combined ratio of 104 percent compared to average of private peers as per RHP – 20.4 percent RoE, 76.3 percent loss ratio and 101.7 percent combined ratio,” the brokerage house said in its report.
JNU Entrance Exam 2018 Dates Released
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) announced on Yesterday the schedule for its entrance examination for the 2018-19 academic session. The university offers a total of 720 seats for M Phil/ PhD courses, 459 for BA programmes and 1,118 seats for MA, M.Sc, M.Tech and MPH courses.
The online registration for the entrance exam 2018 will begin from today September 15, 2017.
