Indian-Origin Appointed Interim President of Singapore
Joseph Yuvaraj Pillay, 83, an Indian Origin civil servant, appointed as Singapore’s acting president until a new head of state is sworn in. Mr Pillay is chairman of the Council of Presidential Advisers (CPA). He will act as the President of Singapore until the new president of Singapore is elected. The polling day is September 23, and nomination day will be September 13.
Mr Pillay took over from Tony Tan Keng Yam who completed a six-year term yesterday.
Rajiv Kumar Takes Charge as NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman
Noted Economist Rajiv Kumar has taken the charge as Vice-Chirman of government think Tank NITI Aayog. Mr Rajiv Kumar replaced Arvind Panagariya, An Indian-American economist who resigned from the post yesterday to return to academia.
Mr Kumar was a senior fellow at the Centre for Policy Research (CPR). He holds a DPhil in economics from Oxford and a PhD from Lucknow University.
Reliance Foundation Honored With Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar
President Ram Nath Kovind rewarded the Reliance Foundation with the prestigious Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Award for its contribution to the promotion of sports. Nita Ambani, chairperson of the Reliance Foundation collected the award at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) also received the Rashtriya Khel Protsahana Purushkar for its ‘Identification and Nurturing of Budding and Young Talent’ (IDCO) program.
Swiss President on 3-Day Visit to India
Doris Leuthard, President of Swiss Confederation is on the three day visit to India. There will be meetings with PM modi and President Kovind and other diplomats in her visit. A number of agreements are expected to be inked in several areas after the talks.
India and Switzerland shares robust economic ties, with Switzerland being seventh largest trading partner and eleventh largest foreign investor for India.
PM Modi’s River-Linking Plan For Tackling Floods & Droughts
Prime Minister Narendra Modi bets on the ambitious project of linking major rivers of India to end deadly floods and droughts. The giant plan entails linking about 60 major rivers of country, including mighty Ganga.
The work will begin in around a month on $87 billion (arond 5.5 lakhs crore) project. The government hopes that it will cut farmer’s dependence on fickle monsoon rains by bringing millions of hectares of cultivatable land under irrigation. It will also generate thousands of megawatts of electricity.
Bridgestone India Appoints PV Sindhu First Brand Ambassador
Rio Olympic Silver medalist and top badminton player PV Sindhu was appointed the First brand ambassador of tyre manufacturing company Bridgestone India. Sandhu signed a three year contract with Bridgestone India, a subsidiary of Bridgestone which is one of the sponsors for the Olympics 2020 in Japan.
Pervez Musharraf Declared Fugitive In Benazir Bhutto Assassination Case
An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan has declared fugitive to former military ruler Pervez Musharraf in murder case of ex-Prime Minister Benazir bhutto. Court also acquitted five others in this case. Two former senior Policemen are sentenced to 17 years.
Rajiv Gauba Takes Charge As Union Home Secretary
Senior IAS officer of 1982 batch of Jharkhand cadre, 59 year old Rajiv Gauba took charge as the Union Home Secretary after incumbent Rajiv Mehrishi retired from service. Mr Gauba had served as secretary in the Union Urban development ministry before being appointed in the sensitive post. His tenure will be of next 2 years.
R.K. Raghavan is New High Commissioner of India to Cyprus
External Affairs ministry announced that former CBI Director R. K. Raghavan has been appointed as Commissioner to Cyprus, Mr. Raghavan is specialized in cyber security. He had been CBI Director from January 1999 to April 2001.
Important Cabinet Approvals- 30th August
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given the following set of approvals. The list of Cabinet Approvals is given as follows.
- MoU on “India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund”- India and Israel will make a contribution of four million US Dollars each for the Fund, both equivalent amount, annually for five years. The Innovation Fund will be governed by a joint Board which will consist of four members from each country.
- Promulgation of the Goods and Services Tax (Compensation to States) Ordinance, 2017- The approval would allow to increase the maximum rate at which the Compensation Cess can be levied from 15% to 25% on motor vehicles for transport of not more than thirteen persons, including the driver.
- MoU with Myanmar for the Conservation of Earthquake-Damaged Pagodas at Bagan.
- MoU between India and Brazil for cooperation in the fields of Zebu Cattle Genomics and Assisted Reproductive Technologies.
